BATTLE WITH RAIDER
ATTACK ON NORTH ATLANTIC CONVOY LAST GALLANT FIGHT BY JERVIS BAY AGAINST OVERWHELMING ODDS. ACTION CONTINUED WITH DECKS AWASH. Some details of the recent attack on a British convoy in the North Atlantic by a, German raider have now been released, the 8.8. C. reports. It is not known to what class the raiding warship belonged, but it is considered that it was either a pocket battleship or one of the Nuremberg type. The raider immediately opened fire from five miles away and the armed merchant cruiser Jervis Bay promptly took up the challenge. At the same time the convoy was ordered to scatter. Shells struck the Jervis Bay, which eventually caught fire. With her decks awash and still blazing, the gallant ship continued the fight against overwhelming odds until she exploded and sank. The magnificent fight put up by the Jervis Bay enabled most of the convoy to make their escape and 24 ships have already been reported back to safety.
