MAURICEVILLE COUNTY

MONTHLY MEETING REPLACING OF BROOKE’S BRIDGE. NOXIOUS WEEDS INSPECTION. (“Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held in Masterton yesterday afternoon. Mr E. W. Cheetham occupied the chair. There were also present: Councillors D. Bennett, A. Forsberg. A. Gray. J. H. McDonald and O. Welch. The treasurer submitted a statement which showed a credit balance of £721 17s 3d. Accounts amounting to £519 10s Id were passed for payment, Mr Myers was reappointed deputy dog registrar for 1941. The license fee was fixed for 2s 6d, plus Is for hydatid treatment.

Two tenders were received for the Kopuaranga stream bridge and the clerk (Mr A. W. G. Hollings) was instructed to forward them to the Main Highways Board for consideration. The matter of appointing a clerk of works was left in the chairman's hands.

A report was received from the engineer concerning the state of Brooke's bridge, a bridge on the main road, south of the Mauriceville station. The chairman reported that he had conferred with the engineer on the matter and as a result had made application for a special Government subsidy of £2 for £1 to replace the bridge. He had also interviewed the district engineer, who had stated that the proposal would have to be considered by Cabinet. In the meantime the bridge had been closed to all heavy traffic. The clerk reported that steps had been taken to apply for sanction to raise a loan in connection with Brooke's bridge from the Local Government Loans Board. It was decided to write to the Public Trustee drawing his attention to the growth of blackberry on a local farmer's estate.

It was also agreed that the local noxious weeds inspector be asked to carry out an inspection of the county. Traffic Inspector W. G. Milne submitted a report which stated that the conduct of traffic in the county was satisfactory.

The overseer’s report was received and prospective work was discussed.
