A Great Race. The Derby at Riccarton yesterday was a great race and provided a finish worthy of the occasion, six of the seven starters being blanketed. Don't Forget made all the running from Sir Beau and Enrich, followed by Sir Cameron and Beau Leon, with Belle Cane and Lambourn bringing up the rear. Belle Cane had nearly fallen going out of the straight and she was badly placed in the running. The pace was sound and there was no change in the order till the half-mile, where Beau Leon began to move up on the outer of the leaders, followed by Lambourn, while Belle Cane was checked when trying to go up on the inner. Don’t Forget held on remarkably well in the run up the straight, but Enrich gradually overhauled him with Beau Leon making a strong challenge on the outer and Belle Cane trying to get up on the inner between Sir Beau and Don’t Forget. At the post Enrich had overhauled Don't Forget by a neck, with Beau Leon only a head away and there were then only small margins between the first three and Sir Beal, Belle Cane and Lambourn. with Sir Cameron beaten off. The only one that excuses could be made for was Belle Cane. Badly placed all the way. she did not get a go till Sir Cameron pulled away from the rails about the three furlongs. There was a good opening a little later just after passing the false rail, but she failed to come through, and it was only in the last hundred yards that she was doing her best. She was then going so well that her chance looked second to none, but at the last moment the gap closed and she had to be checked. On the other hand. Beau Leon stayed solidly but lacked brilliancy.
A Clerk's Luck. A clerk in the totalisalor house al Saratoga Springs (New York) racecourse punched four place tickets in error for a horse called Bay Carse, and as he could not sell the tickets he was “stuck” with them. Yes, the horse ran into a place all right, and the operator won £72 by his error.
AVONDALE
Lucrative. Lucrative, winner of ‘he Victoria Derby, cost 410 guineas as a yearling and he has already won £11,200, but only £122 10s was returned to his original purchaser, Mr F. N. Levin. Shortly afterwards Mr R. W. McLean secured a half-share in the colt, and after he had failed to gain a place in the V.A.T.C. Deubutant Stakes and the Maribyrnong Plate at Flemington, Mr McLean bought the remaining interest in him. He won at his next start the Rawdon Stakes at Williamstown, and he is now already one of the turf's best bargains of recent years.
A Dream and a Request. The sporting writer of the Dunedin “Star” has received a letter from a woman in which she states that she dreamed that she saw a black horse driven in a “cart” winning the New Zealand Trotting Cup. Its driver was “an old man with a walrus moustoche." and he was wearing a pink “shirt" with bright red sashes over each shoulder. This correspondent says she has never been on a racecourse in her life and encloses £1 to be put on the totalisator on this horse. The sporting writer says he does not know whether the veteran trainer-driver of Dusky Sound will be flattered, but her description of the colour of the horse, the jacket, and the driver certainly point to R. Townley’s candidate, and the money will be invested 10s each way.

The rider of Snake Gully in the Juvenile Handicap on the first, day. F.
