DIRTY LAMBS
A LOSS TO FARMERS. There was a general complaint by freezing companies last season at ‘the big proportion of dirty lambs sent to the various works. Why the trouble was worse last season than usual is perhaps difficult to suggest, although it is possible that the big proportion of light lambs, caused through the bad and erratic fattening season, may have been more susceptible to scouring. At all events the trouble was so serious that it required special attention at the works to get rid of the offensive matter, such a necessity does not assist in maintaining the hygienic environment that is desirable. At least one organisation was compelled to grade a lot of these lambs as seconds, so that the carelessness was a costly one to offenders. This same penalty will probably be inflicted this season unless there is an improvement. Other fatteners delayed attention to the lambs until a day or two before they were dispatched to the works,, which, at the best, is only minimising the trouble. The lambs show the effect of the late treatment in many cases and the bruised or marked carcases as a result' may fail to grade.
