FAST FREIGHTERS

BEING BUILT FOR BRITAIN IN U.S.A. PROMISE OF RAPID DELIVERY. PURCHASE OF OTHER SHIPS DISCUSSED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, November 7. The “New York Tinies” Washington correspondent says that Britain has completed arrangements for the construction of 120 freighters at a cost of 100,000,000 dollars. They will be manufactured piecemeal throughout the nation and will be assembled on the west coast at the rate of one a week. The freighters will be 300 feet long, with 25,000 horsepower engines, giving a speed of 18 knots. Britain is also negotiating for the purchase of an additional 63 freighters from the Maritime Commission and 80 to 100 others from private owners. The British purchasing officer, Mr Purvis, after a conference with President Roosevelt in Washington, announced that he was flying to Britain shortly, doubtless to bring more orders for defence materials.
