WAIRARAPA AYRSHIRE
PURCHASED FOR WAIKATO. Mr Peter Beverley, q£ Matamata. recently purchased through the agency of Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., an outstanding yearling Ayrshire bull from the noted breeder. Mr J. G. Donald, of Ardgowan, Featherston. This bull, Mr Donald maintains, is one of the best he has bred. His sire is the dual Royal champion bull. Netherton Mahmond, imported from Scotland. Mahmond is undoubtedly one of the greatest bulls in the world today and is proving a wonderful sire. His breeding is outstanding, as he is by one of Scotland's most famous breeding bulls, Tessnessock Double Cream, with a long list of notable sons and daughters. His dam is equally famous. Mr C. E. Robertson, who inspected her when on a visit to Scotland last year, states that she is one of the greatest cows of any breed he has ever seen. This cow, Netherton Miranda 11., has five consecutive records under ordinary dairying conditions, which average 6301 b of butterfat in an average period of 315 days. Her mature record was 7131 b fat in the same period. Mr Donald has used in his herd no fewer than three bulls imported from Scotland and two from Canada. All his best blood is behind Mi- Beverley’s new purchase. The dam, Ardgowan Lady Star, is one of Mr Donald’s best cows and triumphed over all breeds at the Wairarapa Show. Running with a herd of 80 cows and heifers and machine milked, she produced 4581 b butterfat in 284 days. She was sired by another famous imported bull in Thorncroft Star Boy, undefeated Royal champion of the Dominion, whose stock have placed him in the very forefront as a sire. One of his sons was also a noted Royal champion winner. The grandam is another of Mr Donald’s best cows, and is like her daughter, noteworthy for her excellent udder and productive ability, having produced under the same conditions 4421 b fat in 271 days. This is the second son of Netherton Mahmond (imp.), that Mr Beverley has secured for use in his herd. At the Waikato Show last week Mr Beverley, in strong competition, won both t the championship and reserve with ‘ Ardgowan-bred bulls, the champion being the three-year-old bull, Ardgowan Evening Star, by Thorncroft Star Boy (imp.), and the reserve champion, Ardgowan Catalogue, by Netherton Mahmond (imp.). A yearling son of the latter imported bull supplied to Mr P. Bremer, another Waikato breeder, was second in his class.
