CARTERTON

HOUSE BROKEN INTO SUM OF MONEY STOLEN. ("Times-Age” Special.) Between 8 and 9 o’clock on Tuesday evening a house in the vicinity of the town was broken into during the temporary absence of the occupants and a tin which contained over £5 in halfcrowns and florins was stolen. The thief entered the house by way of a back window. Personal Items. Mr. A. J. Whiter, well-known in Carterton. and now a resident of Heretaunga. has found it necessary to enter Wellington Hospital for treatment. Mr. Fred. J. Sparks, who is wellknown in Carterton, has been discharged from Pahiatua Hospital and has returned to his home at Hukanui. Mr C. J. Fisher, of Carterton, left thisafternoon on a visit to Nelson. Mr and Mrs Harding, 'of Rexwood Street, Carterton, have received word that their son, Captain Eric Harding, who commanded the British trawler Hickory which was sunk by enemy mines, suffered a broken leg. The Wellington Education Board inspectors, Messrs Stubbs, Wilson and Bringam, are on their annual visit of inspection of the local schools and will Cleaning up Rubbish. The borough workmen yesterday commenced their monthly clean up of the town. The rubbish is taken to the borough’s disused pit in Brooklyn Road and buried. There will be one more clean up before Christmas. Bound for Riccarton. Several racing enthusiasts will leave Carterton tmorrow to attend the New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton. Some will travel by air from Rongotai ail’ port. Girls’ Club. Members of the Carterton Girls’ Club had a very successful rehearsal last evening in preparation for the forthcoming concert. Card Party. At the weekly card party held by the Scout Committee last evening there was a good attendance. The prizes were won by Mesdames Pinfold. Challis, A. Thompson and Mr Williams.

Caledonian Fair. The annual Caledonian Fair held by the Ladies’ Guild of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church will take place tomorrow. The stalls will be well filled with useful goods. The fair will be officially opened by the Rev. W. J. Couling at 11 a.m. 'Up to Data Bacon Factory. The “Times-Age” representative visited Mr H. J'. Brown’s bacon factory yesterday and found his staff very busy manufacturing bacon and hams. Many pigs were on the hooks in readiness to be cut up and turned into bacon. The chilling chamber and the curing room

were loaded up with hams and sides going through the process of being manufactured into those first-class bacon and hams for which the factory has such a high reputation. From the curing room to the smoking room the methods used were the most modern and sanitary. Mr Brown in another column notifies that he is still receiving pigs for killing and curing on farmers’ behalf. He is also a cash buyer of bacon pigs. To keep pace with an ever growing industry Mr Brown is having another freezing chamber added to the premises. Tradesmen are now engaged on the work which when finished will make the factory one of the most modern in New Zealand.
