The continued subsidence of the old coal workings under the Ohai School have led to the complete abandonment of the school. Only six pupils out of a total roll number of about 160 attended the school following a meeting of parents held on the previous night. Officials of the Southland Education Board then visited Ohai and began negotiations to secure temporary accommodation for the pupils until a new school can be built. Iho subsidence in the workings some 400 feet beneath the surface has alTected the whole building, and cracks can be seen in the foundations. The surrounding sports area also has subsided unevenly, and it is suggested that any further movement may seriously en-l danger the stability of the school.
