ROOSEVELT WINS
ELECTED FOR THIRD TERM INDICATION OF SUBSTANTIAL MAJORITY. WITH ADEQUATE BACKING IN BOTH HOUSES. Mr Franklin I). Roosevelt has been re-elected for a third term as President of the United States.
At the stage to which counting has been carried, the 8.8. C. reports, President Roosevelt is said to have secured 468 of the 541 electoral votes. The popular vote is:— Roosevelt 22,199,000 Willkie 18,451,000 At an incomplete stage, Mr Roosevelt was leading in 39 States and Willkie in eleven. The House of Representatives return at present is:— Democrats 239 Republicans 118 For the Senate 18 Democrats and 8 Republicans are thus far shown to have been elected. Mr Roosevelt’s full control of both Houses of Congress is stated therefore to be assured. Mr Willkie sent a telegram of congratulation to President Roosevelt and called for unity in forwarding national defence. The state of parties in the seventysixth Congress elected on November 8, 1938, is as follows: — Senate: 69 Democrats, 23 Republicans, 2 Farmer-Labour, 1 Progressive, •1 Independent. House of Representatives: 262 Democrats, 170 Republicans, 1 FarmerLabour, 2 Progressives. The whole of the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate is re-elected every two years.
WELL AHEAD ROOSEVELT LEADING IN 39 STATES. BIGGER DEMOCRATIC MAJORITY IN CONGRESS. (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) NEW YORK, November 6. At noon the popular vote for President Roosevelt was 22,190,000 and for Mr Willkie 18,451,000. The returns indicate that President Roosevelt’s election is not only certain, but that the Democratic Party will retain control in both House of Congress. President Roosevelt is at present leading in 39 States with a total of 451 electoral votes. Mr Willkie leads in nine States, with 80 electoral votes. The Democrats have increased their majority in the House by ton, defeating fourteen Republicans, but losing four seats to the Republicans. A Democratic majority somewhat above the present 259 to 167 division figures is likely. Progress results indicate that 201 Democrats, 91 Republicans and two Wisconsin Progressives were reelected.
