BEAU VITE’S FAILURE

POSSIBLE EXPLANATION FOUND IN DEFECTIVE SHOE. HORSE GUARDED AT STARTING POST. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE. November 6. Beau Vite’s owner, Mr. Ralph Stewart, has revealed that he received information that an attempt would be made to shoot Beau Vite at the starting post yesterday. Mounted troopers kept people away from the start for the first occasion in the history of the race. Beau Vite will be returned to New Zealand soon and spelled for three weeks, after which he will be prepared for the Wellington Cup. Beau Vite is not coming to Melbourne in the autumn but will be in Sydney at Easter. An explanation of Beau Vite’s failure in the Melbourne Cup yesterday was forthcoming today. Beau Vite displayed a little soreness and a slight limp after the race and it was revealed that he had buckled the plate of his oft' forefoot, the plate having spread beyond the wall of the hoof. His trainer. F. McGrath, expressed the opinion that probably it caused pain and was a partial reason why Beau Vite ran about. He walked soundly after a farrier had removed the defective plate. McGrath considers the buckled shoe brought about Beau Vite’s defeat.
