The Roding River water scheme to provide a supply for Nelson and outlying district was advanced a further stage with the holing of a tunnel between Poorman's Valley and Roding, in Aniseed Valley. The tunnel is nearly two miles long, and the greater part of it is through sound slate, which should be quite safe without any support. Begun in July, 1938. the.work has taken two years and a quarter to complete, the rate of progress averaging about three hundred feet a month for the total distance. After the trimming up of the tunnel, which is six feet by four feet, the work of laying concrete pipes will be gone on with, and it is expected the whole job will be completed by February.
