MADE BY THE JAPANESE ’ IN CHINA SUGGESTION IN CHUNGKING. ATTEMPT ON SINGAPORE OR DUTCH INDIES. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright' (Received This Day, 9.10 a.m.) HONG KONG, November 5. Indications are increasing that the Japanese are shortening their lines drastically, by withdrawing from several zones, especially in South and Central China.
Chinese columns are following the retreating Japanese, who are nearing the port of Yamchow, which supplied the Japanese in the Kwangsi Province. Similar withdrawals are reported from Chungshan, across the estuary from Hong Kong, from Swatow and from Yochow and Hunan.
The Chinese “Daily News,” published at Chungking, suggests that the withdrawals are in preparation for a desperate Japanese attempt to seize Singapore or the Dutch East Indies before Anglo-American pressure .crystallises.
