MELBOURNE CUP SURPRISE OLD ROWLEY, AN OUTSIDER, WINS BEAU VITE RUNS FOURTH. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) MELBOURNE. November 5. Old Rowley created the greatest surprise since Wotan's victory in winning the Melbourne Cup at the Victoria Racing Club’s meeting at Flemington today. His form suggested that he had little chance and he was one of the extreme outsiders of the field. Gilltown made the bulk of the pace from Indignity, Wilson, Beau Vite. John Dory and Beaulivre, with Maikai and Tidal Wave in the middle of the field, and Old Rowley fourth last. Pandect raced to the lead at the five furlongs, followed by Dashing Cavalier, Gilltown, Wilson. Beau Vite and Indignity, with the place horses still well back. Old Rowley moved up-very fast passing the half-mile, and ran to the front below the distance to beat the fast-fiinishing Maikai by threequarters of a length. Tidal Wave was a neck away, and then came Beau Vite, (Beaulivre, Lucrative. Apostrophe, Pandect and Pantier, with True Flight and Indignity last. i Though Old Rowley was badly placed in the early stages, his stamina prevailed. His rider, A. Knox, was second on Yarramba to Peter Pan in 1932.
Maikai added to his unlucky run in big races to come second; he was in a similar position last year. Tidal Wave finished well in third place—a great effort. Beau Vite appeared to have every chance on the rails throughout. His weight beat him and he finished a good fourth just ahead of Beaulivre, who led momentarily in the straight.
Lucrative a good sixth. Pandect weakened.
Historian was the disappointment of the race and was never dangerous. The others were outclassed. This winner is raced and trained in Sydney by J. Scully. Old Rowley has now won just over £lO,OOO in stakes. The Sydney jumper, Valhalla, in his first start over the battens in Melbourne, outclassed his rivals in the Cup Hurdle Race. Mamillius ran a game race, but was no match for the winner. North Cape finished fairly well for third. Bailey Payton, trainer of Valhalla, and his owner. Mr P. H. Osborne, were associated with Ecartes, who won this event in 1923. Aurie’s Star had a comfortable win in the Railway Highweight Handicap, and led all the way. All Veil finished well after a tardy beginning, and David Innis was third. The winner’s weight, 11.4, was not a record, as Fujisan won twice with 11.9 and 12.1 respectively. Cradle Song went at a great pace early in the Mimosa Stakes, but weakened, and Cooch Behar had an impressive victory. Primavera ran a good race, and Her Highness finished well.
The winner of the Cup Steeplechase, Solecism, is owned by Dr. A. E. Syme, owner of Deckard, Chauchat, and other great jumpers. Solecism led throughout and won easily. He is a graduate from the hunting field. St. Constant and High Caste staged a great finish to dead-heat in the Yan Yean Stakes. St. Constant might have won outright but for attempting to savage High Caste a hundred yards from the post. Remarc was a good third.
Early morning rain affected the attendance, which was excellent in the circumstances. Conditions improved as the day advanced and the going was satisfactory. Results:—
