OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF (To the Editor.) Sir, —Christmas being only a few weeks away and unemployment still facing a large number of decent citizens (who are thus penalised by circumstances beyond their control) what have they and their wives and children to look forward to as regards what is usually termed "A Happy Christmas?” Could not our worthy Mayor, whose O.K. counts for quite a lot, gel in touch with our local business men. and start something which would give these men work for a while —and at any rate —make it a decent Christmas for them and their dependants. (Incidentally. their earnings would naturally be spent in the local shops.) I am sure that help would not be lacking from the member for the district (Mr J. Robertson) as I have been informed that he is keenly interested in this problem, and if they all "got together' I am sure something could be done. In the majority of other towns in New Zealand where unemployment has been rife, the mayor has generally “started the ball rolling." and I personally refuse to believe that our Mayor could not do as’well (or better) than other gentlemen holding a similar office.
Trusting that my small effort will be taken up by an abler pen than mine, and thanking you for present space and past courtesies. —I am, etc, LESLIE E. GASKIN. , Masterton. November 4.
