BEAU VITE’S WINNINGS
MUST ALL BE REMITTED TO NEW ZEALAND AN AMAZING SITUATION. UNDERTAKING SECURED FROM OWNER. (Bj’ Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) SYDNEY. November 4. The Sydney “Sun’s” special representative at the Melbourne Cup carnival reports that an amazing situation has arisen regarding the destination of the prize-money earned in Australia by Beau Vite. If' he wins the Cup tomorrow the New Zealand Government will insist that the prize-money, totalling, £6250. together with all his other earnings, be remitted to New Zealand. The Commonwealth Government has informed his owner, Mi' R. Slewart, that Beau Vite’s earnings cannot leave this counMr Stewart, interviewed today, said that when he left New Zealand he had to sign an undertaking that all moneys won should be returned to the Dominion. Mr Stewart explained that the position had become so embarrassing that he had referred the matter for legal opinion. He felt he had an obligation to both countries, but there is little doubt that while he is domiciled in Australia he is bound to obey the laws of the country. Beau Vite's winnings since his arrival are £8275. REPORT DENIED NO SPECIAL RESTRICTIONS IMPOSED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. No special restrictions have been imposed by the New Zealand Government in regard to Beau Vite’s earnings, according to official quarters, which regard the report as a newspaper story. It is pointed out that the New Zealand Government could, if necessary. purchase the horse’s winnings and establish a credit in Australia and pay the owner the equivalent in New Zealand currency.
