BOWLING CLUB OFFICIAL OPENING OF SEASON. (“Times-Age” Special.) Apart from one rain shower on Saturday afternoon the weather was perfect for the official opening of the local Bowling Club's season. The attendance of the public and visiting club members was easily the best for many years, there being about 150 present. Outside clubs represented were: Dannevirke, 1 rink; Woodville, 3 rinks; Pahiatua, 3 rinks, and Masterton, 1 rink. Mr N. Williams (president) in welcoming the visitors, said that his committee were most grateful for the splendid attendance at their official opening for the season. He was pleased to say that the game of bowls was proving more popular here this year. Last season the club’s membership was 24, and so far this season 50 members were in sight. The attendance of outside clubs was very much appreciated, and the local club were looking forward to returning the visits during the season. Mr Williams then called upon Mrs Williams to play the first bowl which neatly kissed kitty. Mr Williams then declared the greens open for play. The greens were in perfect playing order, thanks to Mr Len Starr and the green committee. The senior selector, Mr T. F. Edge, performed his duties very well and soon had the rinks matched. During the afternoon tea interval Mr Geo. Hayne, president of the Wairarapa Bowling Centre, recalled the fact that it was 15 years since he had last visited the Eketahuna greens, Eketahuna then being affiliated with the Wairarapa Centre. He congratulated Eketahuna on the enthusiasm shown for the game. Afternoon tea was then served under the supei’vision of Mesdames Williams and Frederickson, who were ably assisted by a energetic band of ladies. After tea the 10 rinks resumed play which concluded at 5.30 p.m. All the bowlers present were unanimously of the opinion that it was the most successful opening day experienced by the club for many years. LABOUR PARTY MONTHLY' MEETING OF MEMBERS. Mr E. D. Toohill, in the unavoidable absence of Mr G. A. Hansen, presided over a good attendance of members of the Eketahuna branch of the Labour Party at a meeting held on Saturday night. Routine business was dealt with and several matters were held over for future discussion. At the conclusion of the meeting the members played cards, the prizes for which were won by Miss M. Hooper and Mr E. D. Toohill. Bush Cricket Matches. The four teams of the Bush Cricket Association played on the Pahiatua Recreation Ground on Saturday afternoon in their first matches of the season. The pitches were in good condition and the day was perfect for the game. Pahiatua defeated Fire Brigade by an innings and 23 runs, and Mangamaire and High School tied. Scores: Mangamaire 59. and 43, High School 41 and 61. Pahiatua 124 (Montgomery 42 not out), Fire Brigade 58 and 43.
