FIRM DEFENCE
MAINTAINED ON GREEK FRONTIER Aircraft Active on Both Sides LANDING OF BRITISH TROOPS ANNOUNCED PREPARATION OF AIR AND NAVAL BASES Today’s reports show that there has been no very important development along the fighting front on which the Greeks are withstanding an Italian invasion of their country. A 8.8. U. broadcast states that there have been no major movements on either side. The Greeks are still holding the mountain positions to which they advanced recently inside the Albanian frontier. Italian planes have bombed a number of Greek towns and villages, without reaching any military objectives. The i heaviest raids were made on Salonika. The initiative in the air has not been left to the Italians. Greek air forces, with which British planes aie co-operating, have successfully bombed aerodromes, oil depots and troop concentrations in Albania. One Greek pilot, having exhausted his ammunition, deliberately rammed an enemy bomber over Salonika. This pilot landed safely. Two members of the crew of the enemy bomber were taken prisoner. The people of Athens are perplexed over Italian reports , that operations have been hindered by torrential rain. The , weather in fact has been dry. . General Metaxas, Prime Minister of Greece, has been elected president of the Anglo-Hellenic League. Greek communities in all parts of the world are telegraphing to General Metaxas promises of voluntary support.
