EKETAHUNA

COUNTY COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING YESTERDAY. ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna County Council was held yesterday, there being present. Councillors' J. B. Carruthers (in the chair), C. T. Richardson, P. Davies. G. Houlbrooke. T. Goggin, C. Davie. G. Bailey, R. W. Kebbell, J. J. Dougherty, H. N. Kebbell and A. J. Perry. The Treasurer, Mr W. N. Richardson, reported as follows: The statement of bank balances at date is: County Fund Account, dr £1707 13s 6d; Imprest Account. dr. £l5 15s 2d; net debit balance, £1723 8s 8d; Bridges Loan £BOOO Account, £2019 13s .' ’: Bridge Fund Account, £263; W ,*-kers Dwelling Loan Account, £42 Ils 6d; Workers Dwelling Loan £lOOO Account, £4O. Receipts for the past month have totalled £450 15s 4d.

Accounts amounting to £2222 12s 5d were recommended for payment. The Eketahuna branch of the Plunket Society wrote soliciting a donation to its funds. —It was decided that a grant of £5 be made. The clerk was granted permission to attend the annual County Clerks’ Conference which is to be held at Palmerston North on November 28.

As an outcome of the councils' appli- - cation to the Cawthron Institute for 1 a supply of gorse' weevils, the acting- ■ Director of the Institute wrote stating that as the weevils had completed the - laying of eggs for the season it would be useless to send out any more. It ’ was also stated that supplies had been • widely spread throughout the Dominion and it was anticipated that colonies of the weevils would soon be found in districts that had not received supplies. Broom and gorse, the letter stated, were the only two plants attacked by the insect, though on the whole very few attacks occurred on broom. — After discussion it was decided that the 1 Institute be asked to supply a quantity ' of the insect to be liberated in this dis- ' trict next year. The Traffic Inspector (Mr W. G. ' Milne) reported that he attended at ' the County Office on three occasions ' during the past month. Seven applicants had been tested. Of these four were granted new licenses, and two extension, while one was refused on account of inability to back a motor ’ car. The conduct of traffic gener- ' ally within the county continues to be satisfactory, he stated. The Engineer, Mr W. C. Duffill, reported inter alia on the work done for the month as follows:— Alfredton Riding: The portable crusher was transferred from Hamua to Alfredton, and was set up in George’s pit. Crushing is. now in full swing. The Mangatakato road has been metalled over the western end. Barton's line was given a good coat of crushed metal from the Main Highway to the Mangatakato Junction. Both these roads when tyned and reshaped should give good service. A start has been made with the metalling of the Flat Bush road. The work of replacing the recently damaged culvert on Wright’s Road has been completed and the road made good. A breakaway was erected on the Waihoki and small slips cleaned up. A start has been made with the grading of the clay section of the Puketoi Road. The chairman gave a resume of the business transacted at a meeting of the Home Guard movement held in Eketahuna that day. HOME GUARD ACTIVITIES IN DISTRICT. A meeting of representatives of the Eketahuna Local Bodies, Returned Soldiers’ Association, Government Departments and Farmers’ Union was held in the Municipal Chambers yesterday to make arrangements in regard to the formation of the corps in Eketahuna and the district. Those present were Messrs P. S. Page, D. D. Ryan, B. Dinnan (Borough Council), J. B. Carruthers, R. W. Kebbell, W. N. Richardson (County Council), A. B. Fordyce, A. H. Herbert (R.S.A.), N. Williams (Government Departments), and J. P. Petersen (Farmers’ Union). Mr J. B. Carruthers was elected chairman. It was resolved to proceed with the enrolments immediately. Enrolment forms may be procured at the Bor- ■ ough Office, County Office and the Post Office. Mr A. B. Fordyce was appointed Battalion Commander of the Eketahuna District, subject to the approval of the headquarters of the Home Guard. Messrs Carruthers and Fordyce un- . dertook to address recruiting meetings . in the country districts. , It was stated that approximately ' one-third of the Home Guard would be | required for military work. ( FAREWELL GATHERING i i MR AND MRS ANDERSON < HONOURED. < 5 A pleasant gathering took place in 1 the Odd Fellows’ Hall on Wednesday : evening when the local members of 1 the Presbyterian Church met to fare- ( well two of their number, Mr and Mrs * Anton Anderson. J The Rev David McNeur presided, £ and a much-appreciated programme was provided by the following: —Saxophone solo, Mr A. Rowden; vocal duet. 7 Miss B. Curry and Mr F. Robinson (accompanied by Mrs Curry). A short I community sing, under the leadership of Mrs Curry, also proved enjoyable. J Mr A. B. Fordyce then conductec 1 several games and competitions, all of which caused much merriment. ;

Just prior to supper being served Mr McNeur. in making a presentation of a clock and bedroom reading lamp to Mr and Mrs Anderson, said that it was a matter for deep regret that Presbyterians had met to say farewell to such staunch members as Mr and Mrs Anderson. All that was left for them to do was to wish them Godspeed and a long and happy future. Other speakers were Mrs Curry and Messrs A. B. Fordyce and Hudson, who referred to the great help Mr and Mrs Anderson had given the church The recipients were accorded musical honours, after which Mr Anderson briefly replied. Supper was served by the lad'es. The gathering was brought to a close with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. GATHERING AT NEWMAN SOLDIER ENTERTAINED. Interspersed with the dancing were voca] solos contributed by Messrs Max Smith and Quirk and Miss Olive Falkner. Messrs H. Brookes and R. Kiddie were the Ms.C. After supper had been dispensed by the Newman ladies. Mr T. F. Edge, on behalf of the residents, presented Private Monaghan with a wristlet watch and wished him a safe return to Newman. Mr G. A. Hanson and Mr T. Hancock also spoke on behalf of (he visitors and R.S.A. respectively. Private Monaghan feelingly replied. The gathering terminated with the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
