CARTERTON

ENJOYABLE FUNCTION PRESENTATIONS TO SOLDIERS. ("Times-Age” Special.) Privates G. S. George, W. Harris and L. G. T. Adams were entertained by a very representative gathering of district residents in the Dalefield Dairy Company's building, Carterton, last evening. * The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, welcomed the guests, and said that the people of Carterton were proud of such a fine stamp of soldiers. He knew that they would uphold the best traditions of the Dominion and the British Empire. He wished them the best of luck and a safe return to Carterton. On behalf of the residents he asked Private George to accept a fountain pen, Private W. Harris a signet ring, and Private Adams a shaving outfit which they did amid applause and the singing of ••For They are .Tolly Good Fellows,” Mrs Harold Hodder, of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union, asked each soldier to accept a parcel of knitted comforts which she knew would be of use to them. The recipients suitably returned thanks. Mrs. P. Beere, on behalf of the League of Mothers, presented each soldier with a parcel of woollen comforts. TWO SOCIALS PRESENTATIONS TO SOLDIERS Belvedere School was the scene of a very happy gathering last evening when the settlers met in large numbers to entertain Private Duncan Smith. The time was taken up with dancing to music supplied by Mrs. Rogers of Dalefield, an extra being played by Mr. J. Mansel on the bagpipes. Vocal items which were given by Miss Yvone Thomas and Mr. D. Irwin were encored, Miss V. Irwin playing the accompaniments. Mr. A. E. Hutt rendered an elocutionary item in splendid style. The guest of the evening was piped into the hall by Mr. Mansel. He was then welcomed by Mr. A. H.. Callister, chairman of the Belvedere Dairy Coy. At an appropriate interval. Mr. A. E. Reid referred to the excellent personal qualities of their guest and wished him good luck and a safe return to Carterton. He asked him to accept a wristlet watch from the settlers. Mrs. Harold Hodder, on behalf of the Women’s Division of the Farmers Union, presented Pte. Smith with a parcel of woollen comforts and extended to him the best wishes of the Division.. Mr. A. E. Hall, on behalf of the Belvedere Cricket Club, handed an eversharp pencil to Private Smith and said that he hoped that when the war was over he would return to Carterton. Private Smith suitably acknowledged the gifts. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Thomas and Mr. R. Bond. Supper was provided by the ladies of the district. A most enjoyable gathering terminated after midnight with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne,” and the National Anthem. CARRINGTON GATHERING. Carrington settlers turned out in full force last evening to entertain Private W. Wilson, son of Mr and Mrs M. Wilson. For the dancing the music was played by Messrs Murray Edwards and C. E. Miller. Supper was provided by the ladies of the district. Mr B. E. Clark said in the course of his remarks that the settlers were proud of Private Wilson. He asked him to accept a wristlet watch, and wished him good luck and a safe return to Carrington. Miss M. Thompson, secretary of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Un- : ion, in a few well chosen words then presented Private Wilson with a parcel of woollen comforts and wished ■ him good luck and God Speed. Personal Items. Mr E. T. Beaven, County Clerk, who has been recuperating after an operation. has returned to Carterton.
