SEA TANK
SUPPOSED USE BY ITALIANS. IN ABORTIVE ATTACK ON SHIPS AT GIBRALTAR.. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON. October 31. The only explanation yet offered of the special device used by the Italians in an attempt to torpedo ships at Gibraltar is a guess that it may be a development of the tiny torpedo craft called a "sea tank," used in 1918 to sink' a cruiser at an Austrian naval base in the Adriatic. Features of the “sea lank" included a silent electric motor and barbed rotary chains enabling it to crawl over harbour obstructions.
A communique issued at Gibraltar stated that the Italians unsuccessfully attempted to torpedo ships in the harbour with a special device. One torpedo exploded harmlessly at the harbour entrance and another ran ashore on Spanish territory.
