SUBVERSIVE STATEMENT
CARPENTER ADMITTED TO PROBATION. CONDITIONS LAID DOWN BY JUDGE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, This Day
■ Cyril. John Holdershaw, a carpenter aged 23, a member of the Communist Party, was found guilty of having stickers in his possession with a view to making or facilitating the publication of a subversive statement. He was admitted to probation by Mr Justice Smith for three years on terms which included that Holdershaw immediately notify the Communist Party in writing that he would now sever and keep severed his connection with it for the period of his probation, that ho should satisfy the Probation Officer that he had given this notice, provided that if peace is made between the British Empire and its enemies before the period of probation expires, this condition shall not continue to operate thereafter. It was also ordered that during the period of his probation. Holdershaw should keep the peace and be of good behaviour, and in particular that he should refrain, from any activity of a seditious or subversive character. He was ordered to pay £3B 5s owing to the Government for a passage from England and £7 14s 6d, costs of the prosecution.
