CARTERTON

BOROUGH AFFAIRS MEETING OF COUNCIL LAST NIGHT. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor (Mr D. L. Taverner) presided at the monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council last evening. There were also present Councillors W. A. Hart. E. McKenzie, L. M. Clark. C. J. DeLacey, O. W. Wolters and J. Udy. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors H. Mortenson, C. E. Stevens and R. A. Copeland. The treasurer's statement was read showing a dr. balance of £Bl 7s 2d in the District Fund account, and a cr. balance of £354 15s 5d in the GasworkAccount. Accounts amounting to £B4l 16s 9d in the District Fund and £222 Is 5d in the Gasworks Fund were passed for payment. Mr C. S. Nicholson, traffic officer, wrote drawing the Council's attention to the fact that trees in Augustus Street apparently obstructed heavily laden vehicles in the course of unloading stock at the Carterton saleyards, and suggested that trees south of the entrance from Belvedere Street be cut down. It was decided to arrange for the removal of the trees. The Masterton County Clerk notified that the Carterton Borough's heavy traffic fees would amount to £9O 5s Id. The manager of the Regent Picture Theatre wrote asking for permission to screen pictures on Christmas Day. It was resolved that permission be granted subject to the programme being submitted to Cr. McKenzie and the Town Clerk for approval. Licenses were granted to the Regent Theatre, King's Theatre and the Band Room. An application regarding the State Theatre was held over, subject to certain repairs being effected.

The Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade wrote submitting proposals in connection with the Emergency Precautions Scheme. Mr Trueman, Building Inspector, is to be asked to report on matters as they effect the Fire Station.

The quarterly report of the Building and Sanitary Inspector, Mr Trueman, was received and disclosed that the health of the borough was in a satisfactory state. Mr L. H. Smart was appointed Borough Assessor. The question of the proposed stock road from Kent Street to Lincoln Road was considered and the matter was left to the Works Committee to deal with. It was resolved that the owner of a culvert in Wyndham Street be given instructions to repair the same or remove it altogether. After discussion it was resolved to increase the Town Clerk's salary to £3BO per annum as from August 12, 1940. Permission was given for alterations and additions to a house in Park Road, and for the erection of a new dwelling in Pembroke Street. The Works, Overseer’s and Gas Committee and Manager’s reports were read and adopted. Personal Items. Mrs J. Crawley, Taylor Street, returned home on Saturday night after having been an inmate of the Wellington Hospital for seven weeks. Mrs Young, of Wairoa, is a visitor to Carterton for show week. The residents of Belvedere and Carrington will entertain Private Duncan Smith at a social on Friday night and make him a presentation. Good music and supper and a dance programme has been drawn up. Mr A. E. Reid is the secretary. Women’s Division. The weekly card tournament in connection with the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was well attended, the funds going towards the Soldiers' Comfort Funds. The prizes were won by Mesdames Brown Finn. F. O’Keefe, and O.Halloran. A competition for a cake was won by O. Anderson, Featherston.
