A BAD WEEK
HEAVY SHIPPING LOSSES DUE TO CONCENTRATION OF U-BOATS. FULLEST precautions TAKEN. (By Telegraph—Press Association-—Copyright) (Received This Day. 9 a.m.) LONDON, October 29. It is officially announced that shipping losses for the week ending on October 21 totalled 198,000 tons, comprising 45 ships, 32 of which were British, seven Allied and six neutral This heavy total is mainly due to a big concentration of German submarines in the Atlantic, against a repetition of which the fullest precautions are being taken.
The loss of 198,000 tons of shipping in the week stated compares with a weekly average of 57,000 tons for the whole war period. A 8.8. C. broadcast states that convoys have since been taken safely through the area in which most of the losses occurred.
