Beau Vite won the Cox Plate at the Moonee Valley meeting brilliantly. It was his filth successive win and he has now appropriated £17,710 in stakes. The race was a great Melbourne Cup trial. The pace was slow early in the race, but Beau Vite led over the last seven furlongs. The last mile was covered in 1.37:1 and the last four furlongs in 49A. His rider McMenamin, said Beau Vite was never in danger of defeat. Ajax had every show. Beaulivre’s third was excellent and his rider Dewhurst was pleased with his finishing effort. Rivette, who was fourth, made an improved effort and is now regarded as a certain Melbourne Cup starter. Gladynev was in a hopeless position when he fell in the Moonee Valley Cup. The horse escaped injury but his jockey, Seiwood, received shock and a fractured rib. Gilltown’s win in the Cup was unpopular in view of his failure in the Werribee Cup earlier in the week. Apostrophe, a fast finishing second, impressed his Melbourne Cup connection. Wilson was in his best form this season, running fourth. Nightbeam failed to show up in the Phoenix Handicap.
