FEATHERSTON

PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE MILLION POUNDS APPEAL DISCUSSED. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a good attendance at a meeting of the Featherston Patriotic Appeal Committee held in the Anzac Hall last evening. The Mayor (Mr J. W. Card) was in the chair. Mr Card explained that the meeting was for the purpose of discussing the National Council’s Appeal for £1,000,000; and also to go into the question of the Emergency Precaution regulations and Home Guard. Mr Sinnell addressed the meeting and gave details of the Home Guard’s scheme. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Sinnell and to Mr Hay for information provided. / It was' reported that a contribution of £l3O had been given by-Mrs D. H. S. Riddiford to the appeal. It was decided that the various committees now functioning for patriotic purposes should act on behalf of the appeal. The Featherston No. 1 and No. 2 committees are to amalgamate. A committee for the purpose of collecting funds was appointed as follows: Messrs A. P, Hardy, Sharp, C. Ritchie, J. King, R. Allen, J. Halpin, F. S. Hayes, R. W. Matthews, T. Hardy. B. Donald, W. Robinson, D. C. Collins, R. W. Barton, C. J. Bidwill R. Donald, A. Robbins, Chas. Buck, P. A. Wilton, Arch. Clark and C. J. Nix. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs King and Messrs T. Hardie and H. Lawson. DEATH OF BOY VERDICT AT INQUEST. At the inquest concerning the death of Jack Henry McNamara held at Featherston yesterday a verdict was returned that death was due to cerebral haemorrhage, the result of having been struck on the head with a cricket ball on the previous day. The Coroner (Mr T. E. Lang) extended the deepest sympathy of the court with the parents and relatives. The Mayor of Featherston (Mr J. W. Card) attended the inquest and on behalf of the people of Featherston extended sympathy to the relatives. COMING OF AGE ! ENJOYABLE PARTY. Mr and Mrs L. McKenna gave a dance in the Kahutara Hall on Wednesday night in honour of their son, Desmond’s 21st birthday. The time was spent in dancing, Mr Juno acting as M.C. The Monte Carlo dance was won by Mr V. Wood and Miss M. Bargh, and the Lucky Spot dance by Mr and Mrs Chas. Buck. The toasts honoured were as follow: —“The King” (proposed by Mr Juno); “The Army. Navy and Air Force” (Mr S. Grant — Sergeant Pilot Vic. Bargh); “The Guest” (Mr Juno); “The Host and Hostesses” (Mr Peter Pearce —Mr McKenna). Mrs T. Duffy presented Mrs McKenna with a beautiful posy. Mr D. McKenna has gone into camp with the Air Force at Levin. .A special word of praise is due to Miss Eileen Cole, who decorated the cake. ,

Visitors were present from Wellington, Greytown, Martinborough, Featherston, Pihautea and Kahutara. A very pleasant time was brought to a close by the singing of Auld Lang Syne.

The music was supplied by Mr Barnes’s Orchestra. The box of chocolates which was raffled in aid of the Dr. Barnardo’s Home by Margery and Buster Juno, was won by Mrs A. Johnson, Te Marie, the number being.s7. The raffle realised £3 10s, which will be added • ; the Kahutara School fund. Pcrsmal. Miss Vai Hunter, Wellington, is the guest of Mrs McKenna. Pihautea. A farewe'l social will bo tendered to Sergeant Pilot Vic. Bargh in the Pihautea Hall on Monday. The funeral of Ihe late Jack Henry McNamara took place yesterday afternoon after a service at St. John’s Church. The cortege was a large one. The pupils of the Featherston District High School formed a guard of honour. The services were conducted by the Rev. J. F. Holland. Boy Scouts were the pall bearers. The staff and pupils of the Featherston District High School, the committee of Featherston Schoo], the P. and T. staff, the Miniature Rifle Club, the Wrestling Club. St. John's Sunday School pupils, the Swimming Club. Ihe Featherston Cricket Club, and the Featherston Boy Scouts, among others, sent wreaths.
