BOARD OF GOVERNORS ORATORY CONTEST RULES TO BE REVISED. ACTING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT. The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa College Board of Governors was held in Masterton last night. The chairman. Mr. W. R. Nicol, was in the chair. There were also present Mrs. J. L. Hair. Messrs. L. T. Daniell, A. Owen Jones. F. C. Daniell. T. Hanley, J. D. O’Connor and G. C. L. Dickel. Accounts amounting to £2OO were passed. A letter was received from Sir Harry Batterbee, British High Commissioner advising that he would not be able to speak at the college break-up ceremony. It was agreed that steps should be taken to bring the rules for the annual oratory contest up to date. Miss J. M. Irvine, Home Science mistress tendered her resignation, stating that she wished to return to Dunedin. The resignation was accepted with regret and Miss Irvine was accorded a vote of thanks for her services. A request from the Masterton Emergency Precautions Committee for the use of the college grounds was acceded to. The secretary. Mr H. M. Boddington, was instructed to send a letter of sympathy to Mr. S. B. Maclennan, art teacher, in the death of his mother. The action of the acting-principal (Mr G. W. Morice) in eliminating the jump events from the girls’ sports programme was endorsed. Mr. Morice reported that the engineering workshops were producing goods for the Defence Department. The acting principal's report was as follows:. — Staff: —Mr G. G. Hancox. principal, and Messrs. J. H. Conly and W. Ball left for camp on Tuesday, October 15, to assist in the training of a new territorial battalion. Mr J. F. McDonald and Miss E. Cook joined the staff asrelieving assistants in place of Mr. Ball and Mr. Conly respectively on Wednesday, October 16. Miss R. K. Edwards who had been on sick leave returned to duty on October 7. Miss N. B. Smaill has been temporarily appointed as office assistant in place of Miss M. R. Smith. Roll numbers:—The day school roll on October 18 was —Boys 239; girls 201, percentage of attendance 92.7. Games: —Summer activities have been begun with enthusiasm. Both boys and girls are training for the athletic sports which are to be held on Thursday. November 7. The tennis season opened on Octobei 12, with a "Yankee” tournament, which was very successful. Saturday cricket began on October 19. A cordial invitation is extended to board members to be present at the annual sports. Mr J. Learning, inspector of secondary schools, visited the College on October 10 and 11. Oratory Contest:—The Intercollegiate Oratory Contest was held in our hall on Saturday, October 5, when the College was represented by Elizabeth McLaren and Alison Morice. The judge. Mr M. 11. Oram, of Palmerston North, placed Solway College first and Wairarapa College second. Evening Student’s Dance: —On Saturday. September 28, the evening stu- | dents held a dance which was well attended, the proceeds being donated to the Cloak Room Fund. Social: —A farewell social to Messrs. Hancox, Conly and Ball was held on Saturday. October 12. when the head prefect expressed the regret of the school at the departure of their guests and wished them well in their military work. Board and Staff: —On Monday. October 14. the staff had the pleasure of I welcoming members at morning tea. This function provided an excellent ! opportunity for members of both; bodies to become better acquainted. It is the hope of the staff that there may be other such functions in the future.
