GALLOPS AT CAULFIELD. BEAU VITE EQUALS TRACK RECORD. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) MELBOURNE, October 24. Conditions were satisfactory for gallops on the course proper at Caulfield. Beau Vite equalled the track record for a mile in 1.40, covering the first four furlongs in 491, and six in 1.141. It was an excellent effort. Gladynev just beat Remarc, with Hathersage 15 lengths away, over nine furlongs in 1.543 —a track ■ record. Gladynev looks improved as the result of his Caulfield Cup run. Cold Salute ran an impressive six in 1.15 j. the first four in 49.!. Pandect, Wilson and John Dory finished together after a sound mile in 1.43. High Caste, Maikai and Prince Ariel were unextended over ten in 2.161. All moved nicely. Ajax put his usual dash into a mile run in 1.421. Hilton covered the smartest five in 1.2. Tranquil Star beat Ouverte over nine in 1.58. Apostrophe, thriving on his Melbourne Cup preparation, beat Indignity over- nine furlongs in 1.57. At Flemington, on the course proper, 18ft out, Beaulivre and Mildura finished together after five furlongs in 1.1 J. Wax Wings, going well, covered a mile in 1.43. Katanga, who looks improved, did a mile in 1.44, the last six in 1.17. Early'Bird rang six furlongs on the inside grass, which proved fast going, in 1.17. Ortelle’s Star did ten on the the same track in 2.18. At Epsom, 15ft out. Rivette covered six in 1.17.}, the first four in 49.!. finishing against the wind. This was Rivette's best effort this spring. Macrob, who is doing well, ran a mile in 1.46}, and Pure Gold, who is regaining form, ran six in 1.19. Industry was unextended to cover a mile in 1.50. At Mentone, 10ft out, Warbird and Velocity went together over a mile in 1.45.3, the first five in 1.4. and Bursary and All Veil ran five in 1.53. Lucrative did steady work and never looked better. Swamps Opponents. A_ magnificent finishing effort by the topweight and favourite, Royal Chief, saw him swamp his opponents in the Wellington Handicap at Trentham yesterday. It was the easiest won race in an important handicap for some time. Royal Chief was always fairly well placed and saving ground on the rails, but it was not until they were really in the straight that he was pulled out and asked for his effort. At this stage Sly Fox had run up to the pace-mak-ers, Areas and Lady Furst, who had been attended throughout by Trench Law, Siegmund. Lockit and Little Robin. Sly Fox was clear of the others at the last furlong, but here Royal Chief swept up and ran past him without apparent effort and won easing up. Sly Fox was clear of Little Robin, who just beat Trench Law for third place. Then came Areas. Siegmund. Ned Cuttie, Pearl of Asia and The Ring. Lady Furst and Lockit faded right out. An Impressive Win. One of the most impressive wins in hack class seen at Washdyke for some time was that of Leighnor in the Taiko Hack Handicap. He had an apprentice allowance and made light work of his seven stone impost, actually outclassing what was considered a good class field ever the final furlong. Leighnor was bred by Mr J. J. McGrath, owner of the sire Leighon then at Waikanae, and at the yearling sales last year was bought by his present owner, Mr. W. Greenhill, of Greymouth, for 90 guineas. The youngster did not boast of much size, and Mr. Greenhill decided not to put him into training until five months ago, when he was broken in. Hark Forrard. dam of Leighnor, is by Hunting Seng from Haligan by Hallowmas from Bonny Helen by Boniform. Hark Forrard is thus a sister to View Halloo, a good winner in the North Island, and comes from the same family as Rercmoana. Lady Cavendish. Golden Hair and others. Leighon. whose stock are doing well this season, was. represented by another winner last week in the two-year-old filly Soutane, who accounted for the Nursery Stakes at Masterton. Soutane’s dam is Habit, by Thespian from Cowl, dam of many useful horses including Rational. Veil, the Monk, Mask. Phrosa, Monastic, and The Masquerader.
