RACING IN AUSTRALIA
NEW ZEALAND SUCCESSES. The success of Beaulivre in the Caulfield Cup on Saturday would no doubt be a surprise to the public, but his trainer, G. Price, stated in a cablegram earlier in the week that the colt was in good order and would show in Melbourne that his Randwick form was all wrong. It will be remembered that Beaulivre had to be pulled up when in a winning position nearing the post in the Epsom Handicap, for which he was a pronounced favourite, and two days later, he ran badly in the Metropolitan Handicap. His owner, Mr E. C. Harnett, of Wellington, proved that he had heavily supported his horse in the Epsom, and the reason for his collapse and loss of form will probably remain a turf mystery. The result of Saturday’s valuable race was a triumph for New Zealanders, as in addition to Beaulivre, Gladynev, trained by J. T. Jamieson for his Auckland owner, was a close second, and was considered to have been very unlucky to have been beaten. Gladynev has been one of the most discussed horses in Australia since the weights for the Cup appeared. He was awarded 6.7 as against 8.4 subseciuently given him in the Melbourne Cup, and he was coupled with all of the likely Melbourne Cup candidates for some thousands of pounds. His defeat would be appreciated by the layers, but there is no doubt that Beaulivre had been taken liberally, especially with Beau Vite, in the Cup double. Beaulivre, who carried 9.0 on Saturday, has 8.13 in the big Flemington race, but is liable to a rehandicap up to 101 b. The third horse. Historian, also has a good deal of New Zealand interest. His rider stated after the race that he will run out the extra distance. He is owned by a former New Zealander, Mr E. Eccles, and is trained by Stan. Reid. This combination won the 1937 Melbourne Cup with The Trump. The narrow defeat of Gold Salute on Saturday would also be appreciated by the layers, as following his recent wins, his owner, Mr A. Cooper, probably supported him for a considerable amount, and he was freely selected to win the Windsor Handicap the night before the race. Whisperlow, winner of the fillies' Mona Nursery, was not named when the entries were made for the classics, but she is probably a chestnut filly by Lo Zingaro from Podokes, owned by her breeder, J. T. Jamieson. Podokes was bred in England by Rock Flint, and Jamieson, always owned her as a brood mare and in New Zealand bred Polyxena. Chief Joy, Koda Pen. Panjandrum and Upoko Ariki from her before taking her to Australia in 1933.
Great Night. Great Night created a surprise by jumping out first in the concluding event, at Washdyke. She was standing flat-footed with the rest of the field when the barrier went up, but in two strides was out clear, and without conceding any of the ground she gained she finished as 'if another furlong or two would not have troubled her. She is owned by her breeder, Mr R. J. Murphy, of Wellington, but is trained at Riccarton by A. J. Martin.
Yogi. Yogi did not furnish between seasons as anticipated, but he ran a sound race into third place at Masterton last week, finishing solidly from the back and it would now appear that he :s beginning to make progress. As one of the fancied candidates for the Nev/ Zealand Cup, it was a more satisfactory effort than he has given his connections for some time. If Yogi continues to progress he can be regarded as a certain starter in the cup. His final race before the two miler will be at Motukarara. RACING _FI™ res Oct. 24, 26, 28—Wellington.
