Fruit, Flowers and Vegetables WORK FOR THE WEEK VEGETABLE GARDEN. The carrot fly will soon be on the ( wing, so take precautions against the egg laying. Plant out tomatoes, marrows, pumpkins, cucumbers ano cape gooseberries, but watch for frosts. Keep the hoe going between the seedling crops, especially after rain. Prepare the trenches for celery with plenty of decayed manure, sow celery for later crops. Make successional sowings of bedns and peas each’ fortnight. Make a small.sowing of onions for pulling green forlsalads. Thin out the earlier-sown crops of carrots, parsnips, beet and (turnips. FRUIT GARDEN. When the petals have fallen from the apples and pears, spray with arsenate of lead to control codlin moth. The peaches and nectarines should be sprayed with lime sulphur, one in 120, as a precaution against ! brown rot. Stone fruits which have set too thickly should be judiciously thinned. Make an inspection of all newly-planted fruit trees to make sure that they are secure Jand not suffering from want of moisture. FLOWER GARDEN. Plant out chrysanthemums and dahlias in prepared beds. Prune the spring-flowering shrubs as they pass out of flower.. When the spring bedding plants have passed their best, dig and manure the beds for the summer occupants. Most half-hardy annuals can be planted out now; zinnias, asters, marigolds petunias, lobelia, salvias and phlox Drummondii all make a good show.
