Rider for The Raker. It is reported that W. F. Ellis has been retained to ride The Raker in the New Zealand Cup. A World Famous Family. The rich “Frank P. Fox Stake,” for two-year-olds, of 14,920 dollars, run at Indianapolis on September 4, was won by Blackhawk, by Abbedale, in 2min 3.!sec. The runner-up in this event. Victorious Hal, went 2min 3Asec, and is by Hal Dale, a son of Abbedale. At Syracuse, New York, the week previously, Blackhawk won the Geer’s Stake for two-year-olds, of 5825 dollars, the second best pacing stake for two-' year-olds of the year. The first four two-year-olds to cross the line in this event were all members of the famous Abbedale family. The Trotting Horse Club Stake, of 832.63 dollars, run the same day, was won by Brookdale, by Abbedale, in 2min 2',sec, a new record for the race. At Middletoun, New York, the Free-for-All was won by Dalehurst, an own brother to Sandydale (New Zealand). Gold Salute. Various prices are said to have been paid for Gold Salute. After his recent win an Australian writer said: “Mr Alan Cooper, one of Australia's most spectacular racing men. won a fortune when the ex-New Zealand horse Gold Salute scored in the Toorak Handicap at Flemington on Saturday. "I paid £9OOO for him, but I've got it back and more,” said Mr Cooper after the race. Gold Salute scored easily by a length and a-quarter from Historian, with True Flight third. After Mr Cooper’s commission, he announced to all who eared to listen that he considered the horse a certainty. There was a rush to follow his lead and Gold Salute soon firmed. The demand for him was so consistent that at the final of betting few bookmakers were prepared to lay a wager against him at any price. The cash payout after the race lasted 40 minutes, and ‘nod’ bets were colossal. One prominent bookmaker estimated that the ring paid out an aggregate of £35,000. Mr Cooper was undoubtedly the biggest winner, but the race was also profitable to Mr George Tancred, brother of High Caste’s owner.”
The Buzzer. The Buzzer was not nominated for the Wellington meeting, no doubt with the object of avoiding a possible penalty for the New Zealand Cup. A Classic Winner. Sir Cameron, the winner of the Great Northern Guineas, cost 220gns as a yearling and was got by Posterity • —Mirabelle 11. the dam of Theio, a winner of the A.J.C. Derby, Victoria Derby and Caulfield Guineas.
