UNDER NAZI ORDERS

LAST PRETENCE DROPPED IN RUMANIA SUPPRESSION OF DEFENCE MINISTRIES. BREAD PRICES SOARING IN BALKANS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, October 21. The Balkans correspondent of “The Tinies” says the pretence of nominal control of the Rumanian army has now been dropped. The Ministries of Defence, Air and Marine have been suppressed and replaced by four undersecretariats for the army, navy, air force and supply. The general staff has ordered all owners of motor-cars to put their ears in repair within six months.

The Rumanian Ministry of Communications has signed a contract with the Italians to build a trunk road from Turnu Severin to Galati, which will link that great port with a point on the Danube, above which the heavier barges cannot nagivate. It suggests a scheme for improving the Axis trade with the Near East markets. The Rumanian newspaper “Universal” announced an increase of 100 per cent in the price of veal, 120 per cent in the price of black bread, 180 per cent in soap, 300 per cent in other bread, and 350 per cent in tomatoes and onions. This gives a vivid picture of Germanised Rumania.

The Bulgarian prices have risen 40 per cent since the outbreak of war and Yugoslavian prices have increased 100 per cent since the beginning of 1939. The peasants in Yugoslavia are bitter because bread prices are soaring to a level equal to four times the price they are obtaining for their wheat.
