In the earliest and longest of last night’s raids, one bomb hit a big building in the London area. Rescue squads released six persons who were trapped when four houses were destroyed and also a number of men, three of whom were dead, from a building in another district, where it is feared that more remain. A baby sleeping in a motor-car was killed when a garage was demolished. The mother, who was in a nearby doorway, escaped. There was much damage in Liverpool and other Merseyside towns. A sanatorium, hospital and nursing home were hit and houses were demolished or damaged. Many modern council houses were, damaged. Ten men propped up fhe roof of a collapsing house with their heads while children were rescued from a room below. MOTHER & CHILD BLOWN FROM THEIR BEDS. THREE GIRLS KILLED ON LORRY. (Received This Day, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, October 18. During the air raids a mother and child were blown from their beds on a first floor through a window into the front garden. Three Auxiliary Territorial Service girls were killed on a lorry in a south-east town, where also an auxiliary fireman warden was killed. CIVILIAN CASUALTIES DETAILS FOR SEPTEMBER. The Ministry of Home Security has announced that during September 6,954 civilians were killed and 10,615 seriously injured during air raids on the United Kingdom. As far as classified returns have been received, the totals are divided as follow: — Men: Killed, 1920; seriously injured, 4,178. Women: Killed, 2,210; seriously injured, 3,629. Children, under sixteen years: Killed, 694; seriously injured, 675. Of the remaining 2,130 persons killed, 1,157 were males and 973 females. Of the remaining 2,133 seriously injured, 1,231' were males and 902 females. HOUSES DESTROYED IN HOME COUNTY TOWN. TWO CHILDREN AMONG DEAD. (Received This Day, 10.40 a.m.) LONDON, October 18. Today’s first alert in the London area sounded this afternoon and planes were heard passing over. During last night’s raids 30 modern council houses were damaged and several were demolished in a town in the home counties. Hundreds of London child evacuees were in the town. Among the dead are two children and a soldier who was home on leave. A number of persons were injured, some lyBombs fell in east Scotland in the morning and a house in a coast town was struck. Two women were dug out alive.
