CENTRAL SCHOOL
COMMITTEE MEETING. LORD'S PRAYER TO BE RECITED IN SCHOOLS. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Central School Committee was held last night there being present Messrs J. E. MeV. Calwell (chairman), W. R. Nicol. C. J. Braggins, A. I. Gibbs. A. V. Dixon and J. H. Cole. Apologies for absence were received for Messrs W. L. Butler and P. H. Shaw. The headmaster submitted a very satisfactory report of the school atten- , dances. The attendance at the commencement of the month was: Central School roll 529, average, 496.7, percentage, 93.9; East School, roll 67, average 59.8. percentage 89.
Two of the new children enrolled are from Edinburgh, and they were given a party by their class mates. Quite a large amount of non-ferrous metal had been collected by the children for the war effort, including two car radiators and 35 pounds of copper rivets and washers. The Parents' Association intended to hold a dance in aid of the London Bombardment Relief Fund. The East School is progressing quite well The Emergency Precautions Committee wrote asking whether the Central School and grounds could be made available for Emergency Camps in case of need. It was resolved that the committee co-operate with the Emergency Committee as far as possible. Mr Nicol reported that he and Mr Coddington had visited the museum with members of the Masterton Trust Lands Trust and conferred in regard to what should be done. A letter from the Trustees was subsequently received sugesting that the Committee approach the Education Board in regard to the housing of the exhibits in the school building. The Headmaster was requested to draft a letter to the Board. The secretary was directed to thank the Trust Lands Trustees for the generous grants made for the current year.
The Headmaster reported what had taken place at the recent meeting of representatives of school committees and others in connection with proposals to improve the position and prospects of the Dental Clinic. His report was received with much appreciation. The question of the desirability of reading the Lord’s Prayer in schools was discussed at some length, and it was resolved that the committee favours repeating the Lord's Prayer in the Masterton Central School and Masterton East School every morning. Messrs J. E. MeV. Calwell. C. J. Braggins and P. H. Shaw were appointed visiting members for the month.
