SUCCESSFUL OPENING
MASTERTON RACE MEETING BIG CROWD AT OPAKI YESTERDAY. INCREASE IN TOTALISATOR FIGURES.
Although rain was threatening in the latter part of the day, the weather was fine for the opening day of the spring meeting of the Masterton Racing Club held at' the Opaki Racecourse yester-' day. A high standard of racing was set and many exciting finishes were witnessed. The main event on the card, the Masterton Handicap, was won in a convincing manner by Lambourn. The track was in capital order and showed no sign of cutting up. After the finish of the Maiden Stakes an enquiry was held concerning interference with Happy Ending. The trouble was proved to have been caused by Batsman, but the stewards accepted the explanation of the rider, R. E. Hawes, that he had done all he could to prevent his mount hanging in. The totalisator figures, under the win and place betting system, reached £lO,274 compared with £7,542 10s last year when the single pool system operated, an increase of £2,371 10s. There was a record attendance for the first day and indications are for another good day on Saturday. Results, additional to those published yesterday, are as follow: —

Vascones filled second place from White. Rajah and Endorsement headed off Bronwen for fourth place. Bronwen finished easily. The favoured Duncannon tailed the field all the way owing to his saddle having slipped.

Gayest Son came through well to fill second position and Phaleron Song came up from the back of the field to take third place. The favourite, Kadina, faded out badly after staying with the leaders for the first few furlongs. ■
