DUTCH INDIES

NEGOTIATIONS WITH JAPAN * JOINT STATEMENT ISSUED. REFERENCE TO AXIS PACT. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.30 p.m.) BATAVIA, October 17. The Japanese and Dutch East Indies delegations have issued a joint statement that “relations between Japan and the Dutch East Indies should not in the least way be affected by the Japanese-Axis Pact. Japan’s only wish is to be co-operative in prosperity with her neighbours. The delegations had several meetings, the oil problem being most prominent among the specific points raised. The Dutch gave elaborate explanations of the oil situation in the Indies. Negotiations are continuing on the’ understanding that the complete scope of subjects will be discussed shortly.”
