MEN FOR SERVICE

MUSTER IN THE UNITED STATES FOURTEEN MILLION REGISTERED. THROUGHOUT THE NATION. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, October 16. At 10 p.m. today it ws estimated that 14,000,000 men between the ages of 21 and 35 had registered throughout the nation under the military service law. The Navy has ordered the second division of the organised reserves from Baltimore to Panama. WITHOUT INCIDENT NO SUGGESTION OF DRAFT RIOTS. (Received This Day, 9.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, October 17. Nation-wide reports showed that the registration for the nation's first peace time military conscription was carried out without even a suggestion of draft riot, contrasting sharply with 1917 when, even in war time, it was necessary in various parts of the country foroibr ly to quell demonstrations. The conscription headquarters here, when they were closed at 10 p.m., estimated that 14.000,000 had registered, which.is 2,000,000 below the preliminary estimate. The total is expected to increase by over 1,000,000 when returns have been tabulated from hospitals, colleges and other institutions, where special registrations are permitted. The registrars reported that’’'there was some grumbling, due to waiting in lines, but the registrants mostly proudly offered their services to the country. New York, despite its polyglot population, had a more tranquil registration than the average section, with total registrants estimated at 1,107,000. The District Attorney said 10 conscientious objectors presented themselves at his office, announced their refusal to register, and were promptly subpoenaed to appear before the Grand Jury. Otherwise there was no incident.
