WAIRARAPA COUNTY
MEETING AT CARTERTON RE-BUILDING OF TAUERU BRIDGE. POSTPONEMENT OF WORK SUGGESTED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council was held at Carterton this morning. Councillor F. Court presided and there were also present Councillors D. McGregor, A. McGregor, F. A. Cameron, E. W. Allen, W. A. Renall, L. Gallon, Jas Strang, A. E. Reid. The treasurer reported a credit balance at the Bank of £8,416 7s Bd. Accounts amounting to £1238 5s lOd were passed for payment. The Taratahi and Carrington Water race reports were read and adopted. Arising out of the Taratahi Water Race report it was decided that the members of the Belvedere riding and the overseer inspect the fluming over a creek on Mr Ready’s farm, Chester Road. The creek had not been cleaned for years and is overgrown with willows, and when heavy rain occurs the creek banks up and overflows into the water race. The water then crosses the Maungaterere Valley sgad and washes away metal from the road. It was thought the cleaning of the creek was the Borough Council’s obligation. Councillor E. W. Allen was of the opinion that the work should be done by the County. The race only needed cleaning a chain each side of the fluming and the trouble would be obviated. The matter was left over till reported on at the next meeting by the members of the Belvedere riding. The Mastertoh County Council wrotestating that the deputation that was to have met the County at today's meeting would not do so until the next meeting. Discussing the proposal for rebuilding the Taueru Bridge it was stated that the present bridge was quite safe for traffic for at least six years to come. It was resolved that the County was of opinion that the work should be postponed in the meantime, but that members of the County meet the deputation at its next meeting in respect of the same. The engineer’s report was read and adopted. On the motion of Councillor D. McGregor, seconded by Councillor Cameron. it was decided that the County proceed with the purchase of four acres 26 perches of land from Mr Bucffianan in the Maungaraki Riding for a stock paddock, at £l5 per acre. It was decided the work on Waihakeke and Swamp roads as submitted in the overseer's report be gone on with at once. The overseer's report was adopted. It was resolved that the work of rounding points on the East Coast Road be gone on with up to the full extent' of the grants.
