CHRYSANTHEMUMS

1 CASCADE VARIETY. V 1 POINTS IN MANAGEMENT. , Cascade chrysanthemums are rapid- - ly acquiring the popularity to which 1 their exquisite beauty entitles them. Some gardeners have tried them but f have been rather disappointed that s they have not been able to obtain the r flowering cascade of growth and bloom. 5 This is quite simple. The plants are 2 not pinched until the stem is four feet r ' in length. Then the growing point is 1 removed, and a side shoot emerges - from each leaf joint. When a side shoot r has made two leaves, its growing point * is also removed. A similar course is ’ adopted with all subsequent side 2 shoots. In that way a large volume of growth is obtained, but this is only 5 half the story. 2 After the removal of the growing 1 point, the plants must not be grown r vertically, or the large mass of side J shoots will point in all directions and 1 will not form a cascade. The main stem

should face the south at an angle of 45 ' degrees; all the side shoots then turn 1 to the light and a charming cascade results. It is not necessary to stake each plant separately. The best way is to run. a wire at an appropriate distance : from the pots and tie the main stem ' to it. When the plants are housed in the autumn there is no untying and risk of breakages. ; ; . ■ ■ , : ; : i
