An inquiry from a woman about the prospects of becoming the first woman conductor on the city's tramway system has been received by the Christchurch Tramway Board. The application was reinforced by four years’ experience in the actual work, for in the last war the applicant had worked on the Glasgow trams. She was invited to put in a formal, written application; but so far there is little prospect of the war’s demands on manpower causing ' the tramway board to employ women on the trams. Such a step was not I necessary in the last war. Actually, j enlistments and the ballot are causing ' the board most anxiety in keeping the trained mechanical staff at the workshops at the necessary strength.
