NEW TYPE OF BOMB

USED BY THE GERMANS IN RAIDS ON LONDON. ATTACKING - FORMATIONS BROKEN. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, October 15. Though last night’s raids on Britain were not on such a great scale as recently, the attack on London was the most intensive yet. The barrage was in action almost continuously through the night. The raiders used a new type of bomb, which was both explosive and incendiary. It exploded in mid-aif. During a raid on a town in the Midlands bombs fell on a home for aged women, killing three and injuring 10. Another struck a departmental store and others demolished houses and damaged office buildings and other premises. Waves of German planes tried to raid the London area later this morning but all their efforts to' reach the capital in formation have been defeated. Up to noon five enemy planes had been shot down in south-eastern counties. Some raiders penetrated singly to the London area. Six people were killed during one alert signal and in the second several persons were buried in a shelter.

The Air Ministry and Ministry of Home Security announced in a communique tonight: "There have been a number of attacks on this country today by enemy aircraft, mostly fighters in the first attack, at about nine o’clock. Bombers also crossed the coast, but few penetrated to London. In London a certain number of bombs were dropped in south and east areas, but the damage does not appear to have been heavy. The number of casualties was few, but some persons were killed. Elsewhere few bombs were dropped and no serious damage is reported.” In today’s air encounters over Britain, the number of enemy aircraft destroyed, as ascertained to 5.30 p.m., | was nine. Ten R.A.F. fighters are j reported missing.
