CARTERTON
ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS LOYAL HEART OF OAK LODGE. ("Times-Age” Special.) The fortnightly meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Odd Fellows was held last evening, Sister Eagle presiding over a good attendance of members, including visitors from Masterton and the District Grand Master and his officers. Two members declared off the sick funds of the lodge, A vote of condolence was passed to \ the relatives of the late Bro. W. Stoodley, members standing in silence as a mark of respect to his memory. The Grand Secretary of the Order wrote acknowledging the lodge's congratulations upon his appointment. P.G. Bro. E. W. Bish wrote stating that he had been transferred from Dunedin to the locomotive engineers' department of the New Zealand Railways at Wellington. Sergeant-Observer D. J. McPherson. R.A.F., wrote notifying that he had left for overseas. it was reported that a property in Wyndham Street held by the Lodge had been sold. The secretary of the Heart of Oak Lodge, Taumarunui, wrote stating that sick pay had been advanced to a member of the Carterton Lodge. The lodge was thanked for its courtesy and a refund of £7 16s 8d ordered to be paid. Accounts amounting to £24 10s 2d. including £l9 16s 8d sick pay, were passed for payment: A hearty welcome was accorded to the Grand Master, Bro. A. J. B. Foote, and his officers, and to members of the Masterton Lodge. The Grand Master gave an interesting talk on the District affairs, and was ably assisted by the Deputy G.M., Bro. Jorgenson, the District Secretary, Bro. E. W. Guise. Bros. R. Farrow, R. Baikie and G. S. Bruce, members of the District Management Committee and Bro. W. P. Holt, of Combination Lodge, Johnsonville. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the speakers. The delegates to the Friendly Societies’ Council were notified that a meeting would be held on Thursday evening. Supper was provided. OBITUARY MR WILLIAM MITCHELL. After an illness extending over three weeks the death occurred last evening at his residence, Taylor Street, Carterton, of Mr William Mitchell, at the age of 86 years. Deceased was born at Tillicontry, Scotland, and came to New Zealand many years ago with his wife ' and two daughters. During the past 22 years he had been a resident of Car- ** lerton. For 12 or 14 years he was employed by the Carterton Borough • Council as an inspector and some years ago retired owing to failing health. Deceased was of a very quiet and retiring nature and was held in high esteem. His wife predeceased him nine years ago. The funeral will take place at the Clareville Cemetery and will be of a private character. Deceased leaves two daughters (Misses M. and K. Mitchell) to mourn their loss and the sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to them in their bereavement. PLUNKET SOCIETY MONTHLY MEETING OF BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Carterton branch of the Plunket Society was held yesterday. There were present: Mesdames Wells. Skeet, Dyer, Armstrong and Trapp. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Candy. Robinson and Taverner. Before commencing the meeting members stood in silence for a few i-noments as a mark of sympathy with Mrs Callender. The nurse’s report for September was as follows:—New cases, 5; babies breastfed, 2; artificially fed. 3; visits to homes, old cases, 63; new cases, 12; visits to rooms, adults. 84; babies. 75; older children, 12; telephone calls, 16. The usual arrangements were made for the Carterton Show days. The amount taken on ''Daffodil Day” was £33 3s 6d and a further £3 4s 6d was obtained for a competition for a cake generously given by Mrs Booth. This was won by Mrs J. Dew, Wyndham Street. The secretary reported the receipt of £62 10s, being the subsidy on the nurse’s salary for the_ half year. . ‘ Accounts amounting to £2B 12s 7d were passed for payment. Personal Items. Mrs W. W. Smith, who recently had a fall at her home at Clareville. has entered the Masterton Hospital for treatment. An X-ray examination disclosed a broken collar-bone. Mrs Jas. Herdman, Senr., has found it necessary to enter Masterion Hospital for treatment. Mr E. Sansum is acting as relieving teacher on the staff of the Carterton District High School until the end of the present term. Miss A. McPhee, who has been on holiday in Christchurch, has returned to Carterton. Bowling. As a result of the efforts of working bees the Carterton Bowling Club's property has been considerably improved. The croquet lawn has been transformed into a bowling green and will be used by the lady members of the bowling club. This green will be officially opened on Saturday. October 26. As there is still much more cleaning up to do another working bee will be held next Saturday.
