FEED BARLEY
POOR RESPONSE TO MINISTER’S APPEAL PRICE CONSIDERED TOO LOW. INCREASE IN S.I. CROPS FOR MALTING. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A substantial increase in the area of malting barley sown this season is indicated in estimates of acreage. A conservative total is 30,000 acres, compared with about 22,000 acres last season. This figure does not take into account a possible increase in area between now and the end of the month by barley sown on land prepared for wheat, which was not put in because of adverse weather. About 15,000 acres of this land is available, though only a portion will be sown in barley. Of the Dominion total production of barley, approximately two-thirds is grown in Canterbury. Of feed barley it is reported that there has been a disappointing response to the appeal by the Minister of Marketing, who asked North Island growers to sow 25,000 acres of feed barley at the fixed price of 3s 6d. This price is apparently considered too low.
