MEETING AT FLEMINGTON GUINEAS WON BY LUCRATIVE. GOLD SALUTE SCORES IN TOORAK HANDICAP. I By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright! MELBOURNE, October 13. The weather was warm and there was a large attendance at Flemington cn Saturday for the opening day of the V.A.T.C. spring meeting. Lucrative led practically all the way to register one of the easiest wins in the history of the Caulfield Guineas from his co-pacemaker, Warbird, and the fast-finishing Velocity. The latter pair are both trained by S. Ferguson. Lucrative's win proved that the colt was unlucky in his Randwick races. Pandect finished well but Tidal Wave was never dangerous. M. McCarten. rider of Lucrative, won the Caulfield Guineas previously with Ajax. Young Idea and Ammon Ra. Lucrative’s time. 1.37, equals Ajax’s race record. Gold Salute, who was well placed early, lost his position at the turn but came again for an attractive win in the Toorak Handicap. He has 8.2 in the Caulfield Cup. The time, 1.35 J, is a race record. Historian finished gamely I and beat True Flight for the place honours. Both pleased their Cup admirers. Chatsbury and Freckles disappointed and Bankshaw made a moderate effort. Panka, who was well placed all through, withstood a strong challenge by Sir Romeo and Alarm to secure a narrow win in the lola Welter. Panka is owned and trained in Adelaide. High Title, who was prominent throughout, won the Debutant Stakes easily, his time, 47;}, being equal to the Australian record. Tea Cake finished strongly, but Law Student weakened. The winner cost 250 guineas as a yearling. His trainer, Fred Hoysted, won the race previously with Lady Mauve and Matinee. Primavera, who was not fancied, created a big .surprise by leading always in the Debutante Stakes. Silver Light ran a game race. Vanessa weakened. Primavera was not sold as a yearling and is held on lease by R. A. Stevens. Rexfelt directed attention to his Caulfield Cup chance by a strong finish in the Herbert Power Handicap. L’ Aiglon. who was prominent throughout the race, was second. The pacemaker, Early Bird, looked a certain winner at the distance, but weakened and finished third. Gladynev, well placed throughout and second at the distance, was ridden out with the whip, but weakened and finished fourth. His effort was not encouraging for his Cup chance. Wilson was a rank failure, but Apostrophe finished well. Results: —

The weather was perfect and the course excellent for the final day of the A.J.C. meeting. The racing was below standard,- by reason of poor fields and the transference to Melbourne of the champions, particularly the New Zealanders. One feature was the further success of the ten-year-old gelding Hope, who followed up his good win of Wednesday in the Sydney Handicap by taking the Waverley Handicap, in which the Melbourne Cup popular candidate Pantier shaped most uninspiringly to be beaten out of a place. Yours Truly, who led the field to the turn, finished strongly. The Randwick Plate was a one-horse race, Dashing Cavalier being the only runner to show to advantage and he consequently had an easy victory. Results: — Cancnbury Stakes. For two-year-clds.
