LONG-RANGE GUNS

! CROSS CHANNEL DUEL GERMANS ANSWERED BLAST FOR BLAST. I I AND ENEMY GUN POSITIONS BOMBED. 1 (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, October 12. In addition to a severe visitation on London and provincial and Scottish towns from the air, the Germans tonight launched a most terrific artillery attack across the English Channel. Both the Calais and Cape Gris Nez batteries opened up, first simultaneously shelling Dover. The salvos fell at three-minute intervals for hours. The night was moonlit and the Straits were as calm as a lake. The English guns answered the Germans blast for blast, while the Royal Air Force heavily bombed the German positions. The cannonade began at 8.30 p.m. without interruption till midnight.
