MAN FOUND DEAD
UNEXPLAINED TRAGEDY IN MANAWATU DAUGHTER IN HOSPITAL WOUNDED. STORY OF ALLEGED QUARREL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., October 12. In response to a message last night the police visited a house at Taikorea, where they found Hugh McDowell, sharemilker, aged about 65, dead in bed. His daughter, Miss May McDowell, aged 27. had meanwhile been admitted to Palmerston North Hospital with a facial wound. Her condition is not serious. About 10 p.m. the inspector of police in Palmerston North, Inspector H. Scott, received information that a tragedy had occurred at Taikorea, and Detective J. B. Long was sent immediately to investigate, being joined by Constable A. Eade in Rongotea, where the latter is stationed. When the police party arrived at the house McDowell was found dead in his bed. He had a slight superficial wound on the cheek, but otherwise the cause of death is obscure. He lived with his family of three, being engaged in sharemilking on a property owned by Mr R. Craig. Reports from the police indicate that some time between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. a quarrel took place between McDowell and his daughter May. A farmhand, Mr James Kinnis, who was sleeping in an adjoining room, in a statement to the police, said he woke and found Miss May McDowell and her father engaged in a struggle. The father was threatening “to finish” his daughter. Mr Kinnis went to the young woman’s assistance, and took the razor from her father. The other members of the family went to a neighbour’s house. A telephone message was sent to Constable Eade, and arrangements were made for Miss McDowell’s admission to hospital. Inquiries are now being pursued by the police and a post mortem will be held.
