CARTERTON
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Women's Institute was held on Thursday when Mrs H. Knutson presided over a fair attendance of members. The meeting opened with the singing of ”The Ode to Friendship” followed by the Aspiration, the prayer for peace and the Institute song, “Comrades and Friends.” Before commencing the business of the meeting, a vote of sympathy with the president and Miss Bairstow in their recent bereavement was carried, members standing in silence for a few moments. A letter was received from Mr Twomey expressing gratitude for a \ sum of money subscribed by members ' to the Makogai Leper Fund. Arrangements were finalised in regard to the assistance to be given to the Parkvalc- Institute on the occasion of the half-yearly Council meeting to be held in Carterton on October 25. Dr. R. N. Campbell was the speaker at the meeting taking as his subject “First Aid, or what to do. or not to do, till the doctor comes.” The members found this talk extremely interesting and at the conclusion the doctor was accorded a vote of thanks by acclamation and was the recipient of a dainty buttonhole. Regret was expressed that Mrs Campbell was unable to be present but a shoulder spray was sent to her.
The competitions resulted as follow: —Girls’ petticoat: Mrs S. Rooney, 1; Mrs G. Steffert, 2; Mrs H. Knutson, 3. Bunch of flowers: Mrs R. J. Grimmer, 1; Mrs G. Steffert, 2; Mrs H. Knutson, 3. Mrs J. Standen judged the competitions and the president thanked her and presented her with a shoulder spray. The meeting concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
ST. MARK’S CHURCH
SUCCESSFUL SALE OF WORK
The funds of St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Carterton, will benefit to the extent of about £lOO as the result of a very successful sale of work held yesterday in the Bandroom. The bazaar was opened by the Rev. W. F. Stent, who said that he was pleased to see so many present. He introduced Mrs Holland, of Featherston, who had consented to officially open the sale of work. In an appropriate speech Mrs Holland said that it was a pleasure to perform the ceremony.
Little Rosemary Armstrong, daughter of Mrs Neville R. Armstrong, presented Mrs Holland and Mrs Stent with a lovely posy each. Mrs Harding was also presented with a shoulder spray. Business was brisk throughout the day and in some instances the wellladen stalls had sold out early in the afternoon. JMr Stent returned thanks for the support given by the public to the sale of work, and to those who had assisted at the various stalls.
The following ladies were in charge of the stalls:—Flowers, Mrs A. F. Pink and Misses Edwards; cakes, etc., Mesdames P. A. Cole, W. C. Deller and L. Aplin; produce, Mesdames H. E. Jackson, F. Court, J. McKenzie and S. Swan; sewing and fancywork, Mrs W. J’. Thomas and Miss Court; confectionery, Mesdames R. P. Wakelin and P. Beere; apron stall, Mesdames T. G. Reading. A. Archer, A. W. Beale, and C. A. Chennells; Guild stall, Mesdames W. F. Stent W. C. M. Sorensen and E. H. Hawker; tea rooms, Mrs W. L. Knutson, assisted by many willing workers. Mrs J. L. Harding (secretary) worked hard for the success of the function, and together with the assistance of the members of the Guild is to be congratulated upon the excellent result achieved. Personal Items. Mr W. A. Harvey, of Pariaka, who has been an inmate of Taumarunui Hospital, has returned to his home having recovered from the operation he underwent. Among those present at St. Mark's Church Sale of Work held in the Bandroom yesterday was Mrs A. W. Beale, of Dannevirke. Prior to removing to Dannevirke, Mrs Beale took a keen interest in St. Mark's Guild and was a staunch worker for the church. Her many friends were glad to see her back in Carterton and she was warmly welcomed. In the “Daily Telegraph,” London, the engagement is announced of Eileen 'Muriel, only child of Mi’ and Mrs Lionel R. Beddall. of Kings Lynn, to Dr. G. J. Grieve, of St. Andrew’s, Fife. Miss Beddall is a native of New’ Zealand, and a niece of the late Mr W. Tucker, of Carterton. Order of Odd Fellows. On Monday evening the District Grand Master, Bro. A. J. B. Foote and his officers will officially visit Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Odd Fellows. The lodge will be tvled at 8 o’clock.
