GRAVE OUTLOOK

RUMANIA SUBSERVIENT TO NAZIS GREECE & TURKEY WATCHING EVENTS. ATTITUDE OF THE SOVIET NOT DISCLOSED. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) RUGBY, October 10. Trustworthy information regarding the development of the situation in Rumania is still scanty, and reports that are current are treated with reserve in official circles here, pending confirmation. The gravity of the position, however, is by no means minimised, and little doubt is entertained that although there may have been some exaggeration regarding the number of German troops who have entered Rumania the new Government there displays readiness to fall in with the wishes of the Nazi authorities and establish specialist troops, fully equipped including anti-aircraft guns, at strategic points on the oilfields and the coast. They are apparently preparing the way for invasion by regular divisions which, according to the latest unofficial reports, are now on the way. The procedure adopted closely resembles that followed in other parts of German-occupied Europe. Recent events in other countries are also regarded. as justifying credence of reports from neutral countries suggesting that the occupation of Bulgaria by similar means is contemplated when the moment is deemed appropriate. Information reaching London from Athens and Ankara suggests that Greece and Turkey are watching developments calmly. The attitude of the Soviet toward the German drive in the direction of the straits, in the safety of which Russia has traditional concern, is not disclosed. According to reports reaching London, the object of Sir Reginald Hoare's further interview with the Rumanian Premier. General Antonescu, last night, was to ask for elucidation of the German military activity in Rumania. GERMAN SUBMARINES OPERATING IN BLACK SEA. SENT DOWN THE DANUBE IN SECTIONS. A Belgrade despatch published in the “Nev/ York Times” states that four German submarines have begun to operate in the Black Sea, the B.E.C. reports. They were sent down the Danube in sections.
