EMPIRE CO-OPERATION
EXCHANGE OF MESSAGES. WITH THE NEW DOMINIONS SECRETARY. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY. October 7. On taking office as Secretary of State for the Dominions, Lord Cranbourne has sent the following telegram to the four Dominion Governments:— “In assuming the important duties of this post at the present critical time. I am happy to think that I can count upon the cordial help that has always been extended to my predecessors. It will always be my endeavour to secure the fullest co-operation between our Governments and thereby to maintain that high standard of joint effort which affords a sure guarantee of victory in the common struggle.” To the Government of Newfoundland Lord Cranbourne said: “I shall make it my earnest endeavour during my term of office to serve the interests of Newfoundland, and I am confident that in this I can rely on the fullest co-operation of the Commission Government.” Similar messages were sent to the Governors of Southern Rhodesia and the five States of the Commonwealth of Australia. To the Government of Eire Lord Cranbourne said: “I shall look forward to maintaining the close and friendly relations between our two Governments." The Governor-General of New Zealand. Lord Galway, replied: “I note with interest your assumption of the seals of the Dominions Office. You may fully rely on the cordial collaboration of his Majesty’s Government in New Zealand in maintaining the full and. friendly co-operation that has always existed between our two Governments and in our association with you in all that is necessary to obtain victory in the great struggle in which we are engaged.” The Prime Minister of South Africa General Smuts, replied: “I send you cordial congratulations on your appointment as Secretary of State for the Dominions. We trust that the loyal and faithful co-operation on our Commonwealth front will continue to make the heartiest contribution possible to the success of the cause for which we all stand.”
