UNIVERSITY SENATE
CONCESSIONS TO STUDENTS. MOTION OF CENSURE. (By Telegrapn—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, October 8. A motion censuring the Senate of the University of New Zealand in its handling of concessions to students giving military service is to be discussed at an extraordinary general meeting of the Canterbury University College Students’ Association on Thursday evening. Moved by Mr R. D. Bell, and seconded by Mr M. A. Jermyn, the motion reads: “That the association considers that the manner in which the Senate of the University has handled the matter of concessions to students in regard to military service merits the severest censure, and calls upon it to rectify immediately the gross injustices at present existing, and make some definite statement of policy for the future.”
Mr Jermyn said today that students were dissatisfied on several grounds. The Senate, if it had any definite policy, had failed to make it clear. As one instance, honours students who enlisted had done so under the impression that they would not be required to sit examinations, yet now they were given notice to obtain leave for examinations. Students were naturally anxious for an immediate and definite statement from the Senate. They were entitled to have their position made clear.
