MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL BRIDGE BUILDING PROGRAMME. ELEVEN REPLACEMENTS PROPOSED. The monthly meeting of the Masterton County Council was held in Masterton yesterday afternoon. The chairman, Mr R. E. Gordon Lee, presided. There were also present Councillors W. I. Armstrong, H. H. Mawley, J. W. Colquhoun, P. R. Welch, G. Moore, J. Donald, and the County Clerk, Mr J. C D. Mackley. * It was decided to apply to the Local Government Loans Board for its sanction to the borrowing of a special loan of £25,000 for a term of 25 years foi the purpose of rebuilding in reinforced concrete eleven bridges within the county under the provisions of Section 25 of the Local Bodies’ Loans Act 1926. The acting-Clerk, Wairarapa South County Council, advised that the council would receive a deputation from, the Masterton County Council to discuss the reconstruction of the Taueru River bridge at Te Whiti, at 1.30 o'clock on Thursday, October 17. It was decided to write to the Wairarapa South County Council asking that the date for the deputation be postponed for one month. The District Engineer. Public Work? Department, advised that £1,850 (£1 for £1) had been provided on the supplementary estimates for the construction of the Motuwaireka Stream bridge on the Homewood Road. The president of the New Zealand Counties’ Association wrote asking al' county councils to make a contribution of £lO towards the London Distress Fund. It was stated that £1,20C was expqcted to be raised by countycouncil contributions. “There could be no more worthy appeal," commented the chairman (Mr Lee). On the motion of Councillor Armstrong, seconded by Councillor Welch it was decided to make a grant of £lO. The engineers, Messrs Seaton, Siadden’and Pavitt, wrote stating that they had lodged the proposals for the construction of the Waihora Stream bridge with the Public Works Department for approval. Proposals had also been submitted for the construction of a stopbank to. minimise flooding over the Matahiwi Road. The engineer, Public Works Department, stated that having inspected the slipping which was occurring on the Masterton si(le of ,the Weraiti Hill it was recommended that a low timber wall would keep the water channel clear for about four feet from the edge of the bitumen. Similar recommendations were made for the BlairlogieLangdale main highway. The recommendations were adopted. As no objections had been received to the taking of certain areas at the Taueru for road purposes a resolution was passed to lay before the GovernorGeneral a memorial containing a list of the lands proposed to be taken for road purposes. Two notices of sale of property within the county were received during the month. The ranger reported having impounded 15 head of wandering stock. , A report was received from Traffic 1 Inspector W. G. Milne on his activities in the county area during the month.

The overseer, Mr B. L. Larson, reported .that the usual maintenance work had been attended to and grading carried out in the various ridings. Slips on the Masterton-Stronvar main highway had occurred during the month and men were engaged on removing them.
